One dog, two endocrine tumors

The two tumors in the image come from a Miniature Schnauzer. On the one hand, an adrenal neoplasm with invasion in the caudal vena cava. On the other hand, a tumor in the left thyroid gland. Histology is ongoing.

Canine T Zone Lymphoma

T-zone lymphoma is an indolent lymphoma subtype. Its diagnostic is dependent on histopathology, although Flow Cytometric pattern is characteristic (CD4+, CD21+, MHC-II+, CD45-) and the evidence of “hand-mirror cells” in cytology is highly suggestive.

This case comes from a mixed breed male dog 8 years old clinically healthy but with chronic submandibular lymphadenomegaly.

The architecture of this lymphoma subtype is characteristic: there is an expansion of the paracortical region of the ganglion by proliferation of small cells, displacing the germinal centers. Fading or collapsed germinal centers are frequently found.

The affected dogs survive with the tumor for many years, an average of 4.5 years without any treatment.

Small, monomorphic lymphocytic cell expansion of the paracortex with collapsed and displaced germinal centers, often in apposition to the connective trabeculae.

Dense proliferation of small, mature, monomorphic lymphocytic cell.

Small cell with little clear cytoplasm, round nucleus very slightly angulated in contour, with fine chromatin lumps and small, generally simple nucleolus. Mitosis are not seen.

CD3 stain. The entire neoplastic cell population is CD3 +. Above the right is a germinal center CD3-

CD20 stain. It is clearly seen how the neoplastic population CD20- pushes and displaces the germinal centers to the edge of the lymph node.

CD20 stain. The medullary region of the ganglion has a marked distention of sinuses and a fibrosis in this moderate case, but that can become intense.
